kw-art-gallery-2016-17-school-programs.pdf

Please find attached Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery’s updated School Programs brochure for the 2016-2017 school year. In this brochure you will find information about our classroom visit program, KWAG 2 GO, and our Tour and Studio Workshops, as well as professional development for educators.

The Kitchener Waterloo Art Gallery is also very excited to share the news about our fall exhibition, Edward Burtynsky, Infinite Change.  For over thirty years, Burtynsky’s photographs have focused on the ways in which industrialization has rapidly changed the relationship that humans have with the natural world.  KWAG School Programs interactive tour and studio workshop will address environmental concerns and “art as activism,” and will encourage students to think about how they can lend their voices to discussions of local, national, and global environmental issues.

Infinite Change opens on September 16, 2016 and runs until January 11, 2017.  See the attached School Programs Brochure for more information about our programs and how to book your visit.  Visit [ http://www.kwag.ca/en/programs/TeachersandSchools.asp ]kwag.ca or email our School Programs Coordinator, Kate Carder-Thompson for more information.

LEAP Camp 2017 Looking for Teachers & Volunteers- WLU Camp for Gifted & Highly

Our campers are gifted/highly able children and youth in grades 1-9 who are looking for a day camp experience that piques their curiosity and has a large “fun” quotient.

LEAP-Sensational-Saturdays-2017-Proposal-Package.pdf

leap_frogDear Teacher:

The Faculty of Education is once again offering a series of Saturday morning enrichment camps, Sensational Saturdays, for local gifted/highly able children and youth in grades 1-9. The focus of the LEAP (Laurier Enriched Academic Program) camps is on enrichment, where basic skills are supported through imaginative activities. All camps are proposed and led by certified teachers who are assisted by volunteers. Camps will be held in the Bricker Academic Building on the Waterloo Laurier campus.

The camps will run from 9:00 a.m. – 12 noon on January 28, February 4, 11, 18, 25 and March 4, 2017. Each camp includes a 15 minute break about halfway through the morning. There will be 10-20 participants in each camp and camps will run based on a minimum enrollment. If you would like to design and run a camp with a theme that is of interest to you, this is a great opportunity. All six sessions must relate to a single theme. We are looking for highly interactive teaching methods, integration of the arts and creative and critical thinking skills, and all of the multiple intelligences. Please see the attached info sheet for more details.

If you are interested in proposing a camp, please fill out the attached curriculum template completely and return it, along with a current resume, to LEAP via fax (519) 884-8697 or email to leap@wlu.ca by October 14, 2016. We will determine which camps will be offered by late October/early November and thereafter send out promotional materials to schools and parents. Registration closes in early January 2017 and decisions regarding the final camp offerings will be made at that time. Please feel free to share this invitation with interested colleagues.

If there are any questions, please contact LEAP at leap@wlu.ca.

Regards,
Colleen Willard-Holt

“This thrill and appreciation of opera (and of all art forms) is a critical part of an education curriculum which ensures an understanding and appreciation that in art and music, one can find inspiration, joy, escapism, awe and humanistic insight – which to me, are all very necessary elements of character development.” Teacher, Dundas Public School

Clay & Glass Field Trip for Visual Arts

The Canadian Clay & Glass Gallery invites you to book now for an educational field trip during the 2015-2016 school year. Our curriculum-based program fosters visual literacy, engages imaginations and encourages creativity.

The two-hour field trip is divided between

  • a hands-on clay workshop, and
  • a guided tour through the exhibition.

clay-glass-programs-flyer-2016-17.pdf

WE ARE HAPPY TO ACCOMMODATE UP TO 60 STUDENTS (TWO CLASSES) PER SESSION!
Classroom teachers (JK to Gr. 8) may bring their class for a cost of $8 per student, with a $120 minimum per class. We advise that teachers arrange to have one adult volunteer for every five
students. Volunteers will be asked to assist throughout the tour and studio workshop. Schools will be invoiced after the scheduled visit. There is no charge for teachers and volunteers.

In the Exhibition Tour students will:

engage in a group discussion based on observations made about the artwork.  This will be done answering questions provided by the instructor that are based on the Arts curriculum. To learn more about our current exhibitions, visit http://www.theclayandglass.ca/current-exhibitions

In the Studio Workshop students will:

Take part in an enjoyable hands-on clay sculpture activity that promotes technical skill development, physical dexterity and creativity. Clay projects are geared for the age and skill level of the class.  Choices include, but are not limited to; lantern houses, masks, picture frames, lidded jars, character heads, and decorative coil-built bowls.  If your class has visited before, let us know the projects they’ve made so we can offer a new project.

Projects are fired on-site; teachers will be emailed when they are available for pick-up. The Gallery makes every effort to fire projects carefully, but on occasion some projects are damaged during the firing process. We do our best to repair the projects. Please ask about cut-off dates for special occasions like Mothers Day and Christmas. These are put in place so that projects can be returned on time.

French Option: Our exhibitions tours are delivered in English, but studio programs can be delivered in French.

JK/SK & Grade 1 Classes: Classes delivered to JK/SK and Grade 1’s are shortened to 1.5 Hours.

Occasionally the exhibitions contain mature themes and subject matter.  Please speak to us upon booking, if this is a concern.

For inquires or to schedule your class trip please contact Nadine Badran, Manager of Public Programs, at: nadine@canadianclayandglass.ca   or (519) 746-1882 ext. 233
